I stink at reading my bible.
There, I said it.
Oh, and memorizing scripture? Ha. I have grandiose plans to…to type up my favorites scriptures, post them around my house {on the bathroom mirror, by the kitchen sink, etc.}, and “chew” on them throughout the day…
But, as I mentioned, I stink at consistently getting into The Word, and that naturally carries over into my inability to memorize it.
David {of Goliath obliterating fame} knew the value and life-giving-power of meditating on the scriptures.
He put it this way {in good ol’ Message bible style, of course}…
“How can a young person live a clean life?
By carefully reading the map of your Word.
I’m single-minded in pursuit of you;
don’t let me miss the road signs you’ve posted.
I’ve banked your promises in the vault of my heart
so I won’t sin myself bankrupt.
Be blessed, God;
train me in your ways of wise living.
I’ll transfer to my lips
all the counsel that comes from your mouth;
I delight far more in what you tell me about living
than in gathering a pile of riches.
I ponder every morsel of wisdom from you,
I attentively watch how you’ve done it.
I relish everything you’ve told me of life,
I won’t forget a word of it.”
{Psalm 119:9-16}
So I’m working on changing my ways…and I’ve stumbled across a brilliant way to help get me into my bible more often: simply leave it open on the dining room table or kitchen counter! And boy, oh boy…it works! It’s becoming a natural part of my day. And I am so enjoying reading a verse here or there, lingering with a cup of tea, nibbling a little morsel for the moment.
Brilliant, I tell you!
Another method would be accountability! There’s nothing quite as pitiful as designing a little diddy with a scripture verse incorporated into it and encouraging other women to memorize it at a new ministry blog you’re been invited to be a part of {did you follow all that}…and not memorizing it yourself! Yikes.
