I interrupt your regularly scheduled lame blog post – about lemon pie – to bring you this rather important prayer request for my sweet sister who, to put it mildly, has had an eventful day in Botswana…
My delightful {ambitious, intelligent, hard-working, compassionate} baby sister has been teaching, preaching and volunteering in Kigali, Kenya and Gaborone, Botswana for the past 6 weeks. She’s supposed to be flying out to South Africa on Friday to spend time with family before she flies back ‘home’ to Michigan in early August, but we’re not quite sure what the immediate future holds for her. Nor is she. Thankfully, we know who holds it.
*She was out hiking in the mountains of Gaborone earlier today when she must have lost her footing and fell 12 feet, rolling another 20+, breaking her ankle and dislocating her shoulder. It is a wonder she is alive! Praise God she had her cell phone and was able to call her hosts in Botswana, and my parents, all the way across the world. While she waited for her host family to find her up in the mountains, family and friends across the world – connected by the wonders of facebook – prayed hard! After hours and hours of waiting, they eventually found her and were able to have her airlifted out. We are so thankful that the baboons, scorpions and snakes were not an issue while she waited for help.
It was a heart-wrenching day for my family (oh, my poor momma!) as we waited for intermittent, brief contact with a very weary loved-one, feeling utterly helpless to physically aid her.
Last we heard, she had arrived at the hospital, almost 9 hours after she fell, still dirty from the hike, and was on a drip for dehydration. Her shoulder has been reset and she is scheduled for surgery at 1:00am EST (7:00am, Gaborone time) to have her ankle reset and a metal plate put in. How she will maneuver, with an arm in a sling and a foot in a cast, is yet to be seen.
She – believe it or not – had her bag stolen a couple of weeks ago, along with the treasures it held: green card, credit cards, camera, cash and passport.
While she was had her passport replaced already, she is still waiting on a {ridiculously expensive} letter from the department of US Naturalization that will allow her back into the United States.
Please keep my sweet sister in prayer as this wild week unfolds! I’ll keep you posted!
