This is what happens when you put fuschia, aqua and avocado green in the same square foot.
It creates beauty of epic proportion.
When we were house hunting 3 years ago, anticipating my disappointment at the arrival of a new Spring without the 100+ tulips that I had grown accustomed to {and waited with baited breath for} that spilled out of the flowers beds of our first house, I prayed that our next home might boast a mature peony bush or two.
God gave me eleven.
Because He’s ridiculously cool like that.
I thought I loved tulips. I have since discovered that I adore peonies.
I also happen to adore my camera {despite my growing urge to upgrade…I shall not covet, I shall not covet…}. So if you stick peonies, a turquoise Ball jar and my kidlets in the same area, the potential for photographic euphoria becomes entirely too strong to resist.
So I went with it.
And it became the perfect example of the power of aperture. I remember thinking two summers ago, “I need to get my hands on a camera that does that cool blurry background thing”.
Enter: the canon rebel and my favorite f1.8 lens
Meet: the glorious effect of playing with aperture
{above: flowers in focus, students are blurry – below: flowers are blurry, monkeys in focus}
I have since learned that tweaking your aperture, or f-stop, wider {lowering the number} or smaller {increasing the number} has the power to make your foreground “blurry” too, it simply depends where your focal point is. Much like the way our eyes focus.
It’s all about depth of field, and I get to talk about all this good stuff this Thursday when 5 fabulous ladies and their kiddos come over to play, eat and learn. Cameras in hand.
I’m excited to “talk camera”, get to know these gals better, and yes…admittedly…to eat whatever yummy dish they bring. A girl’s got to eat.
Cutting all these peonies is hard work, ya’ll.
