One of my absolute favorite things about my husband is that he not only tolerates my quirky, tea-chugging, creatively-scattered, easily-delighted self…but he celebrates all that makes me different.
He makes me tea every day, without being asked…because he knows it makes me smile. Okay, function.
He fills my pellet stove at 1 in the morning, before going to bed, so I’ll be toasty in my studio the next morning. The studio I had no idea – when we bought this home almost 4 years ago – would become my very own space to dream and create.
He listens to me ramble on about writing and spray paint and fonts and vinyl…because he knows freeing me to spread my wings and find my feet makes my heart bubble over, and ultimately effects the atmosphere of our home.
He’s a smart man.
I adore that he gives me room to grow and freedom to dream…while keeping me grounded with sometimes hard-to-hear wisdom and realistic boundaries.
Because that, my friend, is love.
Not the squishy, superficial, Hallmarky type…but the real, raw, love-the-NOT-SO-PRETTY-parts-too type.
So in honor of February being the “month of love”, I decided to throw a little unconventional love your way. Not sparkly heart-shaped mush, but rather something that woos us to more, that reminds us that the best love, as Mr. Sparks so aptly puts it…“awakens the soul and makes us reach for more, that plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds”. Amen, sir, amen.

P.S. I took this photo seven years ago at Seaview Lion Park in Port Elizabeth. My hubby and I were celebrating our third Anniversary, gallivanting across Southern Africa for five weeks, and stopped by this lovely little reserve with some friends.
This scene right here just tickled me…not so much because six gorgeous peacocks were proudly sitting on a fence right before our eyes…but because one simply chose – whether intentionally or not – to be different from the rest.
