I picked up this little dresser a few months ago when I was dropping things off at Salvation Army. I unloaded my bags and boxes, got back in my car and started to drive away, but as I headed past the delivery truck unloading things just ahead of me…this little delight popped into sight.
It was pure furniture-love at first sight.
So I backed up, asked them if I could buy it, and took it home. It’s been sitting in my studio ever since.
Over the weekend, while we were having our last before-school-start hoorah, I started the slow painting process. I say slow simply because I use a mini roller (verses a paint brush), which creates a beautifully smooth finish, and do several coats of primer (because it have a laminate finish, and because sanding is against my religion), and then several coats of home-made chalk paint.
I was so tempted to go with my favorite shade of avocado green or the turquoise blue I’m sort of addicted to, like what I slapped on the dressers I painted a while back – partly because I’m boring a creature of habit – but mostly because my ache to paint things yellow was abruptly stifled when my yellow hallway turned out a rather heinous shade of what-the-heck-was-I-thinking. It didn’t help matters when the yellow mugs I ordered for my merchandise table arrived…also resembling something from a science fiction movie. They practically glowed, shouting “fill me with hazardous material, yo”.
But, terrified as I was, I gave it another whirl…and I’m SO thrilled I did. Because I just love how this turned out.
I liked the herringbone design on the drawers and sides, but the black and white just wasn’t going to work anywhere in our home or office. So while I felt it needed a facelift, I was hoping to preserve the texture and super-unique flavor by having the embossed design show through the paint.
I finished it yesterday with Johnson’s paste wax and plan to fill it this weekend with all the bits and bops that quickly become kitchen & dining room clutter (like pens, paper, mail, coins and the like).
Hooray for a non-heinous shade of yellow that will open up a drawer in the kitchen (which we affectionately call the “wonder drawer”…if you wonder where it is, it’s probably in there!) and help keep our dining room table clear. I also love the way it’s perfectly filled an open corner in our living room.
